Can Every Season Wear

Black?

COLOUR ANALYSIS

OCTOBER 2025

Black is one of fashion’s most loved colours. When I ask clients which colour they could never give up, many immediately say black. It feels timeless, sophisticated, and effortless. It’s easy to wear and seems to go with everything.

But does it really suit everyone?

In the world of seasonal colour analysis, black is not equally flattering for every season. Some people look radiant in it, while others find it makes them look tired or a little harsh. The good news is this — if you love black, you don’t have to give it up completely. The key is understanding which seasons wear it naturally, and how others can adapt it to look harmonious.
Which Seasons Naturally Contain Black
Black is a cool, deep, and highly saturated colour, which is why it appears most naturally in Winter palettes:

True Winter – Black is a core colour and looks striking against the clear, high-contrast features of True Winter clients.

Dark Winter – Still deep enough to carry black beautifully.

Bright Winter – Can wear black best when it’s balanced with crisp white or bold accent colours like fuchsia or cobalt.

For Spring, Summer, and Autumn palettes, black can sometimes feel overpowering or heavy. But that doesn’t mean you can’t wear it — you simply need to know how to make it work for you.

How Each Season Can Wear Black
  • Winter Seasons: Winters wear black effortlessly. Combine it with your clearest colours for contrast — think icy pink, white, or emerald.
  • Autumn Seasons: Autumn tones are warm, and pure black can feel too cold. Try rich browns, deep olive, or warm charcoal instead. If you do wear black, soften it with gold jewellery or a camel scarf.
  • Summer Seasons: Summers are cool but muted, so black often feels harsh. Replace it with soft charcoal, slate, or misty navy. When wearing black, pair it with one of your gentle pastels near the face.
  • Spring Seasons: Springs glow in bright, warm shades, and black can dull that light. Swap it for warm navy, chocolate, or camel. If you truly love black, wear it in lighter fabrics or patterns mixed with your brighter tones.
How to Make Black Work
(Even If It’s Not in Your Palette)
  • Keep It Away from Your Face: Use black for trousers, skirts, or accessories — it’s far more forgiving below the neckline.
  • Pair It with Your Best Colours: Add one of your flattering shades close to your face, such as a scarf or necklace, to balance the effect.
  • Choose Softer Versions: If pure black feels too harsh, opt for deep charcoal, espresso, or dark navy for a similar look with a gentler finish.
  • Use Make-Up to Adjust Contrast: Softer make-up tones can help balance the depth of black if your natural colouring is light or muted.
The Most Important Rule
If you love black, wear it.
Colour analysis is meant to guide you, not restrict you. The right colour should always make you feel more like yourself. If black fits your style and confidence, it will always have a place in your wardrobe — the goal is simply to wear it in a way that complements you.
